GPS stands for Global Positioning System, and it is a technology that uses satellites to pinpoint the location and movement of any device that has a GPS receiver. GPS has its origins in the Sputnik era, when scientists were able to track the satellite with shifts in its radio signal¹. Since then, GPS has evolved into a universal technology that is used by millions of people around the world for various purposes. How GPS Works

This means using the distances from three or more known points to find the unknown position of another point¹². In GPS, the known points are Satellites that orbit the Earth and send signals to GPS devices³⁴. The GPS devices measure the time it takes for the signals to reach them and use this information to calculate their distance from each satellite³⁴. By using the distances from at least four satellites, the GPS devices can determine their position on a map with high accuracy³⁴.

Types of GPS

There are many types of GPS devices available for different purposes and users⁴. Some of the most common ones are Car GPS Navigators, which provide turn-by-turn directions and traffic alerts for drivers⁵. Applications and Benefits of GPS

GPS has many applications and benefits for different sectors and users². Some of the most common ones are Navigation, which helps people find their way on land, sea, or air¹²; Surveying and Mapping, which supports the accurate measurement and representation of the physical world³; Time Synchronization, which enables precise coordination of various systems and networks²⁵; and Security, which enhances the protection of people and assets from crime and threats¹². GPS also boosts productivity, reduces costs, saves time, improves health and well-being, and protects the environment⁴.

Challenges and Limitations of GPS

GPS is not without its challenges and limitations.
