Final Fantasy 16: A Return to High Fantasy and Action

Final Fantasy 16 is one of the most anticipated games of 2023, as it marks the first mainline entry in the legendary RPG series since 2016's Final Fantasy 15. The game is developed by Square Enix and Creative Business Unit III, led by producer Naoki Yoshida and director Hiroshi Takai, who previously worked on Final Fantasy 14 and The Last Remnant.

Final Fantasy 16 is set in the land of Valisthea, a world where people rely on the blessing of giant crystals called Mothercrystals to fuel their magicks. However, as the aether begins to fade and the deadlands spread, so does the conflict among the nations that vie for the remaining crystals. Amidst this turmoil, a young knight named Clive Rosfield finds himself entangled in a destiny that will shape the fate of the world.

Unlike previous Final Fantasy games that featured a mix of fantasy and sci-fi elements, Final Fantasy 16 returns to a more medieval and high fantasy aesthetic, inspired by European history and folklore. The game also features a fully fledged action combat system, where Clive can use various sword techniques and eikonic abilities to fight enemies. Eikons are powerful summons that manifest as colossal beasts, such as Ifrit, Shiva, Titan, and Phoenix. Clive can also ride his chocobo companion, Balam, to traverse the open world.

Final Fantasy 16 promises to deliver a cinematic and immersive story, with a cast of diverse and memorable characters. Some of them include Joshua Rosfield, Clive's younger brother and the Dominant of Phoenix; Jill Warrick, Clive's childhood friend and confidant; and Malphas Zosimus, the mysterious masked man who seeks to destroy the crystals.

Final Fantasy 16 will launch exclusively for PlayStation 5 on June 22, 2023, with a PC version coming later. The game is available for pre-order in various editions, including a collector's edition that comes with a statue of Clive, an art book, a soundtrack CD, and more. Fans who want to try the game before its release can download a demo that is available now on PS5.

Final Fantasy 16 is shaping up to be a true next-generation RPG that will appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers alike. With its stunning visuals, thrilling gameplay, and epic story, it is sure to be one of the most memorable experiences of 2023.
